Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of melanocytes. The exact cause of the destruction of these cells is not known. One possible explanation might be that the body's immune system destroying the cells itself, as in other autoimmune conditions.
Globally about 1% of populations are affected by vitiligo. Some populations have rates as high as 2–3%. Both the genders are equally affected. About half show this disorder before age 20 and most develop it before age 40. Vitiligo has been found even from ancient history.
The only sign of vitiligo is the presence of pale patchy areas of depigmented skin which tend to occur on the extremities. The patches are initially small, but often grow and change shape. When skin lesions occur, they are most prominently seen on the face, hands and wrists. The loss of skin pigmentation is particularly noticeable around body orifices, such as the eyes, mouth, genitalia, nostrils and umbilicus. Some lesions have increased skin pigment around the edges. Patients who are stigmatized for their condition may experience depression and similar mood disorders.
Once the diagnosis of vitiligo has been made, doctor may advise you to check you for thyroid disease, and for other autoimmune conditions that are more common than usual in people with Vitiligo. It occasionally goes away by itself, and some treatments may slow its progress. Treatment improves the appearance of the skin.
The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally. People with certain autoimmune diseases (like hyperthyroidism) are more likely to get vitiligo than people who don't have any autoimmune diseases.
