  • Non-Segmented vitiligo – more common form of vitiligo, it initially appears as a short burst of loss in pigment on a part of body and later spreads to other part. It progresses throughout life.

Natural Ways to Get Rid of White Patches

Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of melanocytes. The exact cause of the destruction of these cells is not known. One possible explanation might be that the body's immune system destroying the cells itself, as in other autoimmune conditions.

Globally about 1% of populations are affected by vitiligo. Some populations have rates as high as 2–3%. Both the genders are equally affected. About half show this disorder before age 20 and most develop it before age 40. Vitiligo has been found even from ancient history.

https://skincareayurveda.com/what-is-vitiligo/

The only sign of vitiligo is the presence of pale patchy areas of depigmented skin which tend to occur on the extremities. The patches are initially small, but often grow and change shape. When skin lesions occur, they are most prominently seen on the face, hands and wrists. The loss of skin pigmentation is particularly noticeable around body orifices, such as the eyes, mouth, genitalia, nostrils and umbilicus. Some lesions have increased skin pigment around the edges. Patients who are stigmatized for their condition may experience depression and similar mood disorders.

Once the diagnosis of vitiligo has been made, doctor may advise you to check you for thyroid disease, and for other autoimmune conditions that are more common than usual in people with Vitiligo. It occasionally goes away by itself, and some treatments may slow its progress. Treatment improves the appearance of the skin.

The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally. People with certain autoimmune diseases (like hyperthyroidism) are more likely to get vitiligo than people who don't have any autoimmune diseases.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Segmental Vitiligo

The condition which is characterized by loss of skin color or appearance of white patches on the skin due to the loss of pigments, melanocytes, is termed as Vitiligo. Any part of the body, particularly sun exposed areas such as eyes, hands, mouth, face, lips, and hair are affected by Vitiligo. This condition suppresses a person’s self-confidence and makes them feel conscious and embarrassed. It is not contagious or life-threatening. 'Shvitra', ‘Shveta Kusth’, or “Kilasa” are the Ayurvedic names of Vitiligo. It is caused due to imbalanced and vitiated Vata, Kapha, and Pitta doshas.
Based on the pattern and area of onset of the white patches on the body, Vitiligo is divided into two types: Segmental Vitiligo and Non-segmental Vitiligo. Segmental Vitiligo (SV) is generally associated with the term “focal” as it develops within a limited area. Though Segmental Vitiligo (SV) starts as small patches initially, it spreads rapidly and develops into large patches. Utmost care should be taken to undergo a proper treatment for SV before it starts spreading throughout the body. Since they are often unilateral, a large white patch may appear on the back side of the right hand, whereas there will be no sign of any patches on the left hand.

Treatment for Vitiligo depends on its intensity such as slow or fast spreading. If it spreads, re-pigmentation treatment is administered. If its condition is stable, re-pigmentation treatment is directly started.
  • Using herbal tablets to relieve stress and soothe nerves.
  • Correcting Immuno-deficiency by escalating majja dhatus
  • Neutralizing the toxins produced from the sources of indigestion, stress, and unhealthy food
  • Stopping disease progression through blood purification
  • Clearing the intestinal track for improving the digestion and absorption of essential minerals and vitamins
  • Applying external medications treats re-pigmentation. Combined medicines of Cassia Fistula, Psorlia cordifolia, and piper longum stimulate cells for re-pigmentation
  • Using herbs like vitix helps gain better pigmentation
  • Preserving newly formed pigments by using different herbal combinations in particular doses
  • Patients are advised to do yoga for 20 minutes in the morning including meditation and exercises to whip off stress which induce proper blood circulation

Ayurvedic Treatment For Vitiligo in India

Vitiligo can be defined as a skin whitening disorder in which the skin at several parts of one’s body turns discolored or pale. The melanocytes are the cells in our body that produces melanin which give pigmentation to our skin. The destruction of these melanocyte cells in an area fails to produce melanin and thus causes the discoloration of our skin.

What causes vitiligo condition?
As per the studies yet, the vitiligo disorder is generated from the destruction of melanin (colouring pigment) producing melanocyte cells in the surface layers of the skin. This destruction can be due to the reverse attack of an individual’s body immune system, disrupting the melanocytes in the area. Thus generating the white patches there.
Situations like; family history, some infections, radiation from TV, exposure to sun, use of some artificial jewellery, pollution etc. can increase the risk of developing vitiligo.

Types of vitiligo:

Many studies have been carried about the types of vitiligo. Depending upon the pattern as well as the severity of spreading of white patches in the body, vitiligo can be divided into two;
Segmental Vitiligo : segmental vitiligo generates symptoms at early stages. This affects only some part (hands, legs, fingers etc.) or one side of one’s body. They may show an increase in their generosity to some extend only.
Non-segmental Vitiligo : Nonsegmental vitiligo starts from a discoloration in a small area, but later on turns to a bitter condition by affecting a big part of your body. This type of vitiligo spreads to a wide area of the body.

Treatment in Ayurveda for vitiligo:

Vitiligo is yet considered as an incurable disease. Treatment for vitiligo in Ayurveda can help to arrest the spreading of the disorder and can stimulate repigmentation in the skin. The improper follow up of one’s diet is considered to be the reason of depigmentation, as this may develop toxins in blood and tissues. Thus ayurveda first tends to restores the proper diet in one by following Pathya (Dietary guideline) which includes strict diet restrictions, yoga, meditation and lifestyle modifications. In addition to this the assessment of the causative factors are also done through treatments like;
Shaman chikitsa : Uses herbal medications as orally and externally
Kastha aushadhi : Includes photosensitizing drugs used locally and systemically while sun exposure.
Ras aushadhi : used to suppress the immune system and stimulate the repigmentation of the skin.
