Ayurveda Treatment for Vitiligo

Vitiligo, a skin disease characterised by loss of pigment cells, is caused due to the irregularities in melanocytes cells. It can occur in people of different skin types and different parts of the body including hands, legs, arms, face, head and even inside the mouth. Although considered to be incurable, Ayurveda treatment for Vitiligo is known to arrest the spread and restore colour to a great extend.
Vitiligo is classified as Shvetha Kusht, Kilasa or Shvitra and is one among the 18 types of kusht as described by Ayurveda. It is known to be caused due to the imbalance occurring between the three doshas, namely, vata, pitta and kabha. Hence Ayurveda describes it to be a ‘tridoshaj’ disease.


The conditions that leads to the imbalance of doshas causing vitiligo as described by Ayurveda are as follows: -
  • Virudh aahar sevan or intake of food with opposite properties
  • Persistent mental stress or pressure
  • Lack of proper hygiene
These conditions are said to lead to an accumulation of toxins within our body which results in irregularities in the functions of the body’s immunity. The Ayurveda treatment for vitiligo is mainly based on improving the digestion and improving immunity to flush out the toxins from the body.
The treatment procedures for vitiligo, involved in Ayurveda include methods for pacification of the imbalanced doshas by purifying the blood and body off toxins. Lifestyle changes and diet plans are installed to improve the digestive system as well. The various techniques involves are as follows.
  • Herbal drugs – a part of shaman chikitsa, these are photosensitising drugs which are used with sun exposure or locally.
  • Herbo-mineral drugs – these drugs helps in arresting the spread and providing repigmentation on the skin that has lost colour.
  • Pathya – these include diet plans, regular exercise plans along with yoga and lifestyle guidelines to control factors such as stress which contributes considerably towards the spread of the disease.
These treatment techniques are followed up with other maintenance treatment methods to ensure that the disease does not spread together.
